The "cliff effect": why missing by 1 kWh costs $150+
Texas bill credit plans apply a flat credit — often $125 — only if your usage reaches an exact threshold like 1,000 kWh. Fall even 1 kWh short and you lose the entire credit, and your whole month is billed at a higher base rate. The result is a cost "cliff":
Use 1,000 kWh
$75
credit applied ✅
Use 999 kWh
$229
credit lost 🔴
Using less energy made the bill $154 higher. Example based on a 4Change Energy Maxx Saver-style plan.
This is why guessing is dangerous near the threshold. A cool week, a vacation, or a short billing cycle can quietly drop you below the line. HitMyCredit watches your daily usage and warns you in time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I will hit my electricity bill credit?+
Divide the kWh you have used so far by the number of days into your billing cycle to get your daily pace, then multiply by your total cycle length. If that projected total is at or above your credit threshold (usually 1,000 kWh in Texas), you are on track. HitMyCredit does this automatically every day using your SmartMeter Texas data.
What happens if I miss my bill credit by a few kWh?+
On most Texas bill credit plans, missing the threshold by even 1 kWh forfeits the entire credit — often $100 to $125 — and your whole month is billed at a higher base rate. Using 999 kWh can cost over $150 more than using 1,000 kWh.
Why does the billing cycle matter for my credit?+
The credit threshold is measured per billing cycle, not per calendar month. Texas billing cycles vary from about 28 to 32 days and rarely line up with the 1st of the month. A longer or shorter cycle changes how many kWh you need per day to qualify.
How many kWh per day do I need to hit a 1000 kWh credit?+
On a 30-day cycle you need to average about 33.3 kWh per day to reach 1,000 kWh. If you are behind partway through the cycle, your required daily pace goes up for the remaining days.
Is this calculator free?+
Yes. The calculator is completely free. HitMyCredit also offers free automatic daily tracking that reads your SmartMeter Texas usage and alerts you before you miss your credit — no credit card required.
